Men's Ties
"A well-tied tie is the first serious step in life" -- Oscar Wilde
Acquiring a diverse collection of neckwear is an accomplishment. The 1st step toward acquiring a diverse collection is to develop an appreciation of what neckties are all about. Knotted beneath the collar of a crisp dress shirt, a fine looking tie speaks of confidence, style and maturity. A necktie is one of the few items through which a man can reveal his personality or mood, regardless of whether he purchased it himself or had it thrust upon him as a Father's Day or birthday present. Despite several attempts to kill them over the years by the move to casual attire, neckties endure.
A high-quality necktie will stand out from a cheap cravat in any number of ways. Lay one of each down next to each other and you'll notice the difference in heavier and more substantial silks, prints with a wide variety of distinctly colors, and interlinings and back "self-tipping" that extend the full length of a well-made tie. As for weighting, look for ties with a balanced "hand" or feel between the inner lining and the outer fabric, that aren't too bulky, and that won't bunch up when knotted. "Squeeze a tie in a handful, or give it a good tug and it should be able to bounce right back."
Whatever its weight, hand, fabric, folds, design or price, remember the right necktie is all about self-expression, and thus purely in the eye of the wearer.
