DESIGN YOUR CUSTOM SHIRT

Dress for Success!
The dress shirt is one of the 1st steps! Dress shirts can underscore your
professionalism. Pick out a dress shirt that can underscore your sense of style. Deciding factors can include color, style and fabric. Of the three, fabric should weigh the most as it determines the quality of your dress shirt.

The first aspect you should think about is color. For a professional look, a long sleeved
white cotton dress shirt is always a good choice. Oxford cotton is the most practical
choice, simply because cotton will wrinkle less than other materials. Also, white dress
shirts will go with any men’s suit you own. You may choose another light color besides
white. Pale yellow, pink or blue are common choices, but will make choosing your tie
more challenging, but adventurous.

The ideal shirt wardrobe should consist of at least 24 shirts, because of the shirts that you own – typically at any given time: 8 of your shirts you wear, 8 are dirty &
8 are at the cleaners. The 24 shirts should consist of an assortment similar to this:
  • 8-10 white dress shirts consisting of plain whites and white on white jacquards barrel cuffs and French cuffs.
  • 4-5 blue dress shirts
  • 2-3 ecru or yellow dress shirts
  • 1-2 pink dress shirts
  • 2-3 stripe dress shirts
  • 3-4 various patterns dress shirts – stripes or checks

The following features are used in the designing and making of custom dress shirts. You will be asked to provide the following information when you place your order for a custom shirt:

1) Color
2) Collar style
3) Cuff Style
4) Pocket Style
5) Front Style

COLLARS
For such a simple thing, a shirt has incredible power! It can make a portly man look slim (choose long slender point collars which takes the focus away from the neck) or give a slender man more bulk (choose spread collars to make you look fuller). Collars are the most important part of the shirt, as they are the 1st thing that someone sees, so choosing the right collar is very important. Comfort is paramount in a collar. Some men prefer a looser fit & that can take the focus away from a large neck.

CUFF STYLES
Men looking for custom dress shirts today have more possibilities than ever before –
that’s why there are lots of cuff style options to choose from. Men can choose the barrel cuff or the French cuff for a variety of business and social settings. The barrel cuff is standard fare, with one or two buttons on each cuff. However, for a more unique custom look: we recommend a mitered cuff, in either barrel or French. The French cuff is the dressier of the cuff styles and it is very elegant when combined with cufflinks. Originally worn only for the most formal occasions, the French cuff has become popular in a variety of applications. The French cuff gives a gentlemen the opportunity to wear the classiest form of jewelry -- a pair of beautiful cuff links. (Please check out our Men's Accessories section for some fun options).
POCKETS
Custom shirts look much dressier & cleaner without pockets. However, if you need a
pocket, don’t hesitate to request one. We have many pocket styles to choose from:
mitered, rounded, and square with or without a flap. You may even have two pockets per shirt. Custom dress shirts with 1 pocket & no flap would be a dressier look, while two pockets with flaps would be appropriate for a casual shirt.

FRONT STYLES
We offer many possibilities to allow you to create your personal style. Placket fronts have stitching on either side of the buttons. The Plain Front is a simple alternative to the placket. The fly front has the buttons hidden behind two layers of fabric in front for a clean, contemporary, no button look.
BACK STYLES
We offer many possibilities to allow you to create your personal style. Plain back is the simplest and is great for people who launder their shirts at home, as there is less ironing involved. Box pleat back is the recommended style for button down shirts.
Men who appreciate detail often choose the Inverted pleat back for a distinctive, fashion forward look (not recommended for a portly gentleman).
The Side pleat back is a versatile classic that looks great with any style collar and front. This custom shirt style allows a bit more room in the back

TAIL STYLES
A standard dress shirt will have a rounded bottom. However, if you want the option to wear the shirt casually (wear outside of trousers) you may wish to choose a square
bottom style. The square bottom will often be about 1-1/2”-2” shorter than the round
bottom.

MONOGRAMS
Monograms add an elegant touch to your custom made shirt. Monograms are quite
popular and make a statement about your personal style. The most popular location is the left cuff. However, if you choose to do a shirt with no pocket, a waist monogram
placement is very unique. The monogram is typically placed on the left side about 6
inches above the waist. Please list monogram initials in order of appearance: JLS (James L. Smith). Monograms are a personal decision of style & if you would like to try one, CustomSuitsShirts.com does NOT charge extra for monograms.
